Preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN)

Program Learning Outcomes

PLO 1 – Supporting All Students:  Collaboratively develop Individualized Education Plan/Individualized Family Service Plans (IEP/IFSP) to meet the educational needs of individuals with disabilities.

PLO 2 – Creating Effective Environments: Create inclusive learning environments based on principles of positive behavior support that reflect the diverse perspectives of students and their families.

PLO 3 – Organize Subject Matter: Implement accommodations and evidence-based instructional strategies in the Least Restrictive Environment to address State Standards.

PLO 4 – Design Instruction and Learning Experiences: Plan and design multifaceted evidence-based instruction and learning experiences through collaboration to support positive outcomes for students.

PLO 5 - Assessing Student Learning: Use multiple assessments that appropriately meet the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities for eligibility, placement, and instruction.

PLO 6 – Developing as a Professional Educator:  Reflect on teaching practice and integrate pedagogical knowledge and skills to ensure professional behavior and growth.

PLO 7- Effective Literacy Instruction for All Students: provide effective literacy instruction that is organized, comprehensive, systematic, evidence based, culturally and linguistically sustaining, and responsive to students’ age and prior literacy development. 

Credential Program Information

The Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Mild to Moderate Support Needs authorizes the holder to conduct Educational Assessments related to students’ access to the academic curriculum and progress towards meeting instructional goals, provide instruction, and Special Education Support to students with mild to moderate support needs related to one or more of the following disabilities: autism, emotional disturbance, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, and traumatic brain injury; in kindergarten, including transitional kindergarten, grades 1-12 through age 22, and classes organized primarily for adults in services across the continuum of program options available.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) content is included in the Preliminary Education Specialist Instruction Teaching Credential programs for all specialty areas. The preliminary and clear credential authorizes the holder to provide autism instructional services to students within the specialty area(s) of their credential.

The Education Specialist Preliminary Teacher Preparation Program includes content for teaching English learners that authorizes the credential holder to provide instruction for English language development and specially designed academic instruction in English within the subject area and grade level authorization of the Education Specialist Instruction Teaching Credential.

School of Education Program Support Fee

A program support fee is assessed every enrolled session for students in the School of Education credential and degree programs. This fee supports essential services, tools, and coaching that enhance academic success through support systems. This fee directly supports the School of Education’s commitment to preparing highly effective educators and educational leaders through high-quality, student-centered programs. Please see Tuition and Fees section of this catalog for corresponding fee.

*This course provides interns the CTC-required continued supervision and mentorship as they complete the requirements for a California teaching credential.  This is for interns who are not enrolled in EDMM 561 or 562. EDUU 588 is a 0-credit course which requires a $250 fee for each session in which a candidate is enrolled. This course can be repeated.      

Interns enrolled in EDUU 588 who complete their program requirements are encouraged to apply for the preliminary teacher credential as soon as they fulfill all requirements. Candidates do not need to wait until the end of EDUU 588 to start the application process. 

Credential Support Hub 

All credential and MAT candidates will be enrolled in the Credential Support Hub during their first term of enrollment and continue through conferral. The purpose of the Hub is to support candidates with the completion of the non-coursework requirements for clinical practice. The Hub is a 0-credit course.

Previous Credentials

Candidates who hold another California teaching credential may be able to waive certain courses or requirements and should consult with their academic advisor.
